light screen

This light screen was developed from the primary principle of reconfigurability, the result of which allows for the light screen to meet porosity specifications and dynamic geometric configurations. The reconfigurability is accomplished through the two primary actions of rotating and shifting the front unit relative to the back unit. These initial gestures are then propagated throughout the light screen during construction.

The versatility of this project was realized by developing the combined unit from a hexagonal base geometry. This base geometry ensures universal dimensions throughout the screen and also allows for expansion in six directions. The multitude of expansive directions facilitates the light screen’s ability to generate overall unique geometries and also eliminates uninterrupted seams along a single vector, which would weaken the structural integrity.

In addition to the principle of reconfigurablilty, this project was designed to be lightweight. This was achieved by designing the loads to be distributed throughout the screen rather than being absorbed by each individual unit. Beyond this load dispersion, each unit takes advantage of tapering thicknesses and structural ridges in order to increase load resistance at calculated and observed weak points.
