smart systems : dumb units

The premise of this project is to take advantage of commonly available materials and introduce a system that allows the materials to achieve complex functions. This example uses polycarbonate and steel to create moments of tension, compression, and residual forces. Through these properties, a two dimensional sheet of the intertwined materials has the ability to become a three dimensional surface. In addition to the geometric properties, the programmable surface interacts with the environment’s light, sound, and ventilation allowing for the control and manipulation of an area.
